Mustangs dominate Class 1 girls soccer awards

JF, Blacksburg boys well represented in Class 4 1st team

Elliston, Va. – The VHSL Class 1 Coach of the Year is Eastern Montgomery’s Whittney Shaver, and the Player of the Year is Mustangs’ senior Maddie Bruce. Bruce scored more than 50 goals during the Mustangs’ undefeated season, and 116 goals in her illustrious career. The Mustangs win their third consecutive state title under coach Shaver and haven’t lost a soccer game in three seasons. East Mont dominated the rest of the 1st team as well.

Bruce is joined by Aija McHone( who scored the state title-winning goal in triple OT), Madeline Mirolli, Hannah Blankenship, Lilly Underwood, Nadya Hubbard, and Logan Boone were also named All-State first-teamers.

In boys Class 4 soccer, both state semifinalist Jefferson Forest and perennial power Blacksburg had players honored on the first team. For Coach Scott Zaring’s Cavaliers, Chris Wiley, Haisten Linn, and Tyler Beck earned top honors. For the Bruins of Shelley Blumenthal, Edric Zhang, and Kai Feng were named 1st-team.
