ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Catholic schools in our area and around the country will be using Pope Francis's visit to the U.S. as a teachable moment. In Lynchburg Holy Cross School is holding a 'Rally Around the Flag Pole at 7:50 a.m. in front of the school. Various other activities at Holy Cross Regional Catholic School include the fourth grade class making a timeline for the Pope's visit. High School English classes will view one of his U.S. speeches online as a group. They will then write a reflection. School Chaplain, Father Jim Gallagher who is traveling to Washington, DC to see the Pope will discuss the experience with our students at the all school Mass on Thursday, Oct 1 at 8:15 a.m. in the school gym.

Virginia Tech will conduct a full-scale test of its VT Alerts system on the Blacksburg campus as well as university facilities located in six regions across Virginia including Roanoke and Danville. The test will occur between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Alerts go out to phones, through text messages and in your email. The alerts are set up to communicate urgent information to students, faculty, and staff on campus during an emergency.

Expect river levels to change as operators at Gathright Dam near Covington will conduct a pulse release. The pulses are conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It will begin at approximately 6 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. and will increase levels 3 to 4.5 feet in the Jackson River. The pulse release is one of six that the Norfolk District scheduled through October. All dates subject to change based on weather conditions and rainfall.

Today is the last day to vote in the Pink Glove Dance Competition. LewisGale is the only healthcare system in Virginia competing. This is the third time a LewisGale hospital has entered the competition, each time it has placed in the top 10. To create the video the hospital enlisted the help of Salem Fire-EMS and the Salem police department, Floyd Ward School of Dance, and numerous hospital employees from many departments.  A portion of the video was also filmed at the LewisGale Field home of the Salem Red Sox. The participants danced to Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars. The video with the most votes wins $10,000 to donate to a breast cancer charity. LewisGale has designated the Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Virginia as its charity.

The Christiansburg Recreation Center will host a Preventing Falls & Safety Fair on Wednesday, September 23 from 8 - 11 a.m. Carilion Clinic Internal Medicine physicians will be on hand to conduct fall risk screenings; blood pressure screenings; and gait assessment and training. Participants will have a chance to win a tub shower chair or an elevated toilet seat, donated by the Christiansburg Home Depot. Today is the annual See You At The Pole even hosted on school campuses nationwide to pray for our nation, community, and individual schools. Liberty Christian Academy has an event that begins at 7:30 a.m.

In today's world, peace needs to become more than just a word.  Monday was the official International Day of Peace, declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly, in 1981.  At 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, because of rain Monday, the students and faculty of Salem Montessori School will hold a celebration for the International Day of Peace. In honor of this day, they will participate in Pinwheels for Peace by planting pinwheels with messages of peace at their Primary/Elementary campus located at 101 Corporate Blvd, Salem.  The students of Salem Montessori School, and their families, will create pinwheels of all colors, shapes, and sizes.
