Averett, Danville Life Saving Crew prepare for fall sports season

Joint training exercise held to help prepare for athlete injuries

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University and the Danville Life Saving Crew are making sure they're prepared for the fall sports season.

At the beginning of the season, they hold a joint training exercise to help the university's athletic training students and the life saving crew members get to know each other.

This year's scenario was a football player with a spinal injury that needed to be carted off the field and taken to a hospital.

The students and life saving crew members both said they appreciated the training.

"It makes it more comfortable. It's going to make it feel like working with family, not working with strangers," said Averett athletic training student Desmond Springs.

"We did it last year and we did it at our facility. We thought it'd be a great advantage to come up on site and bring the members and the volunteers that come up, and work the standbys to see exactly what they expect of us," said DLSC chief Robert Woodall.

The Danville Life Saving Crew provides standby medical support during the university's athletic events.
