16-year-old girl dead after shooting in Danville

Victim pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital

DANVILLE, Va. – Danville police continue to search for the person or people who they say shot and killed a 16 year old.

As the sun came up Sunday morning, most of the 700 block of Paxton St. remained blocked off with crime scene tape as Danville Police Department and Virginia State Police investigators continued to process the crime scene.

According to police, a 16-year-old girl was shot around 3 a.m.

A few minutes after the shooting, she showed up at Danville Regional Medical Center, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Thirteen year old Tyrese Garland heard the shooting.

"I got up and I'm, like, 'What's that noise?' That's when I went to the bathroom, came back, put my head (under) the cover and went to sleep."

He says the shooting is scary.

"It scares me because it could've hit somebody's house. It hit people's cars. You never know. It could've went through somebody's window and killed them. You never know," said Garland.

"These young people out here are getting too reckless. You wouldn't like for nobody to come on your street and kill your sister or your brother," Garland added.

Fourteen year old Jeffrey Logan also heard the shooting.

"(It's) sad. They wouldn't want anybody trying to kill their parent, their mother, shooting up their mom's car or anything else, so why come on this street and shoot up everybody else's stuff," Logan said.

Police have not released the victim's name, saying the name will not be released because the victim is a juvenile.

Details about what may have led to the shooting have also not been released.

Over forty evidence markers were scattered throughout the street and investigators could be seen examining a red sedan with a back window that appeared to have been shattered by gunfire.

The scene is just a few blocks away from the home on Cabell Street where a man was shot and killed last week after arguing with his neighbor and a few blocks away from the home on Shelton Street where a man was shot and killed during a home invasion in May.
