Star Flight Training gives WSLS 10 exclusive story on launch of new air tours

Air tours return to Star Flight Training after more than decade

ROANOKE, Va. – It's the best seat in the house with wings!

“We'll be 1,500 feet above the ground, you’ll get a different perspective of the city, different buildings and other attractions from a bird’s-eye view,” Andrew Munsey, pilot at Star Flight Training, said.

Starting this weekend, Star Flight Training in Roanoke will be offering aerial tours in a modern four-seat Diamond aircraft to the public.

“I'm very excited about doing the air tours, because it's been a while since we've been able to do that in the Roanoke Valley,” Jon Beard, chief pilot at Star Flight Training, said.

This air tour service hasn't been available for more than a decade.

“In the early 2000s there were some incidents that changed regulations, probably for the better to make air tours more safe,” Beard said.

Beard says these tours will give passengers a unique way to experience the Roanoke Valley.

“We can also do custom rides for people if you want to see a childhood home or looking for a really unique way to do a proposal,” Beard said.

“This is exciting to us, because it’s new, it's different, and it will be great for tourism,” Catherine Fox, vice president of public affairs and destination development at Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge, said.

So long as the sky is clear, this air tour can last up to one hour of flight across the Roanoke Valley and beyond.
