Kids in special education class get surprise delivery of toys that match them

Roanoke College faculty and students deliver toys modified to look like kids

ROANOKE, Va. – Children in a special education class at Oak Grove Elementary School got a special surprise delivery of toys from the Roanoke College faculty and students.

But these are not just any kind of toys you would find at the mall.

It’s a toy box revolution!

“What we do is we modify the toys that we buy from donations and we make the children and the toys match,” said Frances Bosch, a professor at Roanoke College.

Students at Roanoke College have been modifying toys in a class called Differabilities so that children can enjoy them this holiday season.

“The kids were really excited. I think they love seeing toys that had similar differences that they do, because you can't go to a toy store and find toys that are always in a wheelchair,” said Rebecca Gruber, a teacher at Oak Grove Elementary School.

“We don't focus on disability. We don't like that word. The children are different so we do toys differently,” Bosch said.

While I got to speak with some of the children, most of them were too busy enjoying their new matching toys.

Toy Like Me calls on the global toy industry to represent the millions of children worldwide with disability and difference.
