Dorothy McAuliffe visits Roanoke elementary school

McAuliffe recognizes cafeteria workers for giving students healthy meals

ROANOKE, Va. – Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe visited Westside Elementary School in Roanoke Thursday.

The visit came after Roanoke City Public schools were awarded the Food for Thought Award to fight hunger.

McAuliffe recognized the school's cafeteria workers for giving students healthy, fresh meals. Westside was one of the more than 1,000 schools that joined in the no-cost breakfast initiative.

"The more locally we're purchasing food. the less distance the food has to travel. the great cafeteria staff like here at Westside are doing a great job. and for school lunch; if you haven't tried a school lunch lately. try one at your local school," said McAuliffe.

The initiative is part of a statewide push focusing on the importance of locally grown breakfast food.
