ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. – The owner of this Great Dane decided on Thursday to allow the Alleghany Humane Society to keep his dog.
The Humane Society believes he would have had to surrender Jewel anyway due to the evidence of starvation.

The Humane Society's veterinarian said that because Jewel was starved, her body had begun to eat her muscle mass.
Jewel now weighs 106.4 pounds, up from 81 pounds when she was seized on April 13, according to the Humane Society.
The Humane Society says she will remain with them until she can be adopted.
