The Virginia Department of Education wants to hear from you on its suggested guidance to help local schools create effective action plans for school-connected overdoses and timely parental notification.

A virtual session will be held on Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., where parents, educators and community members can weigh in on the proposed School-Connected Overdose Response and Notification Guidelines.

The draft guidelines are built on Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Executive Order 28, which was issued in October 2023 following nine opioid-related drug overdoses at Loudoun County Schools. The goal is to ensure that parents are notified about suspected school-connected overdoses within 24 hours. In Feb. 2024, the department issued final guidance in response to the Executive Order detailing best practices when developing parent notification protocols and reinforcing law enforcement collaboration.

In May 2024, Senate Bill 498 was signed into law, requiring the Virginia Board of Education to establish guidelines for school-connected overdose response and parental notification policies to assist local schools.
