Virginia sees 1,385 new coronavirus cases, now reporting 578,559 statewide

There are now 8,943 deaths from the coronavirus in Virginia

As of March 2, Virginia is reporting 578,559 cases of the coronavirus across the commonwealth since March 2020.

As of Tuesday, a total of 2,016,769 vaccines have been administered across Virginia, with 697,879 people being fully vaccinated, according to VDH.

Here’s a breakdown of the 1,385 new coronavirus cases:

  • 122 new cases in Fairfax County
  • 87 new cases in Virginia Beach
  • 74 new cases in Prince William County
  • 61 new cases in Henrico County and Chesapeake
  • 60 new cases in Chesterfield County
  • 57 new cases in Loudoun County
  • 48 new cases in Richmond
  • 42 new cases in Hampton
  • 41 new cases in Spotsylvania County
  • 38 new cases in Stafford County
  • 36 new cases in Newport News
  • 35 new cases in Norfolk
  • 33 new cases in Arlington County
  • 30 new cases in Suffolk
  • 28 new cases in Montgomery County
  • 26 new cases in York County
  • 25 new cases in Hanover County
  • 20 new cases in Caroline County
  • 18 new cases in Portsmouth and Culpeper County
  • 17 new cases in Roanoke County, Petersburg and Albemarle County
  • 16 new cases in Lynchburg and Fauquier County
  • 14 new cases in Hopewell
  • 13 new cases in Prince George County
  • 11 new cases in Frederick County and Staunton

  • 5 new cases in Orange County, Tazewell County, Pulaski County, New Kent County and Amherst County
  • 4 new cases in Carroll County, Lexington, Pittsylvania County, Brunswick County, Wise County, Alleghany County and Sussex County
  • 3 new cases in Warren County, King and Queen County, Greensville County, Salem, Nelson County, Buena Vista, Lunenburg County, Grayson County, Bristol, Floyd County, Scott County, Charles City County, Accomack County and Rockbridge County
  • 2 new cases in Shenandoah County, Franklin, Fredericksburg, Danville, Southampton, Appomattox County, Greene County, Page County, Lee County, Patrick County, Smyth County, Surry County and Charlotte County
  • 1 new case in Roanoke, King George County, Winchester, Nottoway County, Northampton County, Westmoreland County, Clarke County, Essex County, Amelia County, Northumberland County, Cumberland County, Fairfax, Galax, Rappahannock County and Emporia
  • Poquoson, Manassas Park, Fluvanna County, Buckingham County and Dickenson County decreased by one case
  • Charlottesville and Richmond County decreased by six cases
  • James City County decreased by 12 cases

According to the health department, decreases in cases can be attributed to a person getting tested in a different locality than where they live or the automation process for electronically reported lab results may attach the wrong jurisdiction for a particular zip code.

As of Tuesday, the Virginia Dept. of Health reports there have been 7,547,695 total testing encounters.

The term “testing encounters” includes individuals who have been tested more than once due to their profession, high-risk status or need for a negative result to return to work. The health department started using this metric on May 1. To learn more, click here.
