ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Snow packed roads continue to be an issue for people across the Commonwealth. Roanoke city officials said crews were working around the clock on Tuesday to clear area streets.

The first major snow storm of the year has left a mess for drivers and road crews. Roanoke City Mayor David Bowers said clearing the heavy snowfall is a challenge.

"I have to ask people to be patient and cautious" he said.

When it comes to snow removal, city workers said they focus on main streets and bus routes first. They said the goal is to have major arteries cleared within 24 hours after the storm ends. Bowers said the heavy snowfall and the cold temperatures have made it difficult for city workers to clear the roads.

Crews hope Tuesday afternoon's warmer weather will help melt some of the snow, slush and black ice. But with freezing temperatures and more snow in this week's forecast, city leaders continue to ask drivers to be patient.

People are reminded to put their cars in the driveway or organize with neighbors to park on only one side of the street which will allow crews to plow more quickly.
