Tractor-trailer carrying ammonia crashes on I-81, one injured

Both lanes have now reopened

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va.6:45 p.m. Update:

All lanes of northbound and southbound Interstate 81 have reopened in Augusta County, following Monday morning’s tractor-trailer crash. The crash required offloading and hazmat cleanup of the tanker truck’s cargo and fuel.

A tractor-trailer carrying ammonia crashed in Augusta County after the driver had a medical emergency, Virginia State Police said.

The crash occurred around mile marker 210.7 around 10 a.m. on Friday. All northbound and southbound lanes were closed as a result, and major traffic detours followed. VSP said the driver was taken to an area hospital and hazmat crews arrived on scene to handle the ammonia.
