Maryland man pleads guilty in shooting death of Wintergreen police officer

A 25-year-old man has pleaded guilty to four felony counts in connection with the shooting and killing of a Wintergreen officer. (WSLS 10)

NELSON COUNTY, Va. – A 25-year-old man has pleaded guilty to four felony counts in connection with the shooting and killing of a Wintergreen officer.

Daniel Barmak, a native of Maryland, was accused of killing Officer Chris Wagner in Nelson County during an incident that occurred in June 2023.

According to investigators, Wagner was responding to a 911 call when he encountered Barmak in a wooded area.

A struggle ensued over Wagner’s department-issued handgun, during which Barmak allegedly shot and killed the officer.

Barmak’s sentencing is scheduled for September, where the court will determine the consequences of his actions.
