Super Bowl spending trends: food, memorabilia, and more

As the weekend approaches, the big question on everyone’s mind is: Eagles or Chiefs?

But it’s not just about the game; it’s also about what we’re eating, drinking, and buying. The National Retail Federation expects Americans to spend over $18 billion on Super Bowl 59.

Ian Sabo, a fan, shared his thoughts: “Hopefully less than 20 dollars, if I had to guess hopefully. Um, if the Commanders were playing, I would have gone all out, maybe spend 18 billion myself.”

From huge parties to small gatherings, economist expert Alice Kassens notes that inflation is bound to have an effect. “The average Super Bowl feast if you’re having it at home has gone up about a tenth of a percentage point, so not a lot but it all depends on what goes into your Super Bowl feast. So certainly, there have been avian flu issues with chicken and eggs, so the price of chicken wings has gone up 7 percent year over year,” said Kassens, an economics professor at Roanoke College.

The National Retail Federation expects each person to spend around $90 for the big game Super Bowl | NRF, but some people are already ahead of that price tag. Tonya Norman shared, “Yeah, we are going to spend some on food, and memorabilia, we got t-shirts. About 150 dollars… give or take… a little bit ahha.”

For others, it’s not wings they’re going all out on—it’s the big game gear. Trisha Edwards mentioned, “Well my spending was I bought my 2 grandsons football uniforms, Eagle football uniforms… the whole shebang, helmet, jersey, pants, socks,” adding that it cost about $120 in total.

This once-a-year event is something that football watchers and halftime lovers enjoy and go all out for, but Kassens explains that it won’t have too much of an effect on the economy. “Because we are an enormous economy, it probably is a little tick up but not something that’s going to have some huge boost to the economy and certainly not a long run boost, just a temporary boost,” she said.
