WATCH: Community members support VA hospital amidst potential layoffs

SALEM, Va – President Trump’s federal employee buyout offer could have a negative impact on the VA Hospital in Salem.

Some people from the community came out today to show their support for those hospital workers.

“So, the VA is already understaffed. We already have a mental health crisis here in the Roanoke Valley,” said local resident Regan Costello-White. “So, I just hate to think that veterans and their families would have longer wait times to see a provider, that it might interrupt their care.”

The White House is offering seven months salary to more than two million workers if they resign by February 6th. and even though these buyouts are voluntary, White House officials say:

“The majority of federal agencies are likely to be downsized through restructurings, realignments, and reductions in force. At this time, we cannot give you full assurance regarding the certainty of your position or agency.”

According to a 2024 VA report, the Salem VA hospital listed 25 positions at a severe shortage.
