WATCH: Purple Heart Homes establishes first Virginia Chapter

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A powerful collaboration effort is bringing communities together to provide safe, barrier-free housing solutions for qualified veterans.

Leaders from Purple Heart Homes, the Lynchburg Area Veterans Council, and its national organization are working to establish the first Virginia Purple Hearts Home local chapter in Lynchburg.

Their efforts will provide critical home repairs and renovations to help veterans live independently in their homes.

Veterans in the area say the improvements resonate strongly for them.

Mike Lennon, a Purple Heart Homes Board Member, explained, “We want people from the local community who know that veteran to help that veteran. And I’ve seen it several times where the veteran just looks around, looks at their friends, relatives, whoever is there pounding nails, putting up a ramp, or widening a door, and they’re just like, ‘I never knew these people cared about me this much.’”

The Lynchburg chapter of Purple Heart Homes has already helped to construct wheelchair ramps for several handicapped veterans in the area.
