Roanoke City Schools to address high schools overcrowding

ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke City Schools says they should have a recommendation on what to do about overcrowding at the high schools sometime in the next month.

The architects and engineers have been working through the options of building a new high school, which include adding space to the existing high schools or making the Jefferson Center a magnet school focused on the arts and sciences.

They’ve been talking with principals and teachers to get feedback on what will work best, too.

And good news about school buses—they are fully staffed for the first time in years.

There are 136 bus drivers and 68 bus aides and that includes extra drivers to cover when people call out.

They currently have a 96-percent on-time arrival rate as well.

The school system says Zum has kept all of its promises and the bump in pay for drivers and aides has helped, too.
