PowerSchool reaching out to impacted individuals following December data breach

Botetourt County Schools announced that impacted individuals have been notified regarding the PowerSchool data breach.

Those who have been impacted, regardless of whether or not their social security number was obtained, are being offered complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring services.

ORIGINAL STORY:

PowerSchool, an international provider of education administration software, suffered a cybersecurity incident in December that may have impacted Botetourt County Public Schools and Salem City Schools data.

BCPS stated that the security of PowerSchool’s system has been restored, but data of educators and students who are connected to PowerSchool may have been accessed. This breach could have affected many schools around the country.

Botetourt County Public Schools stated that they contacted PowerSchool. Power School stated they are investigating the incident.

Salem City Schools stated that compromised data primarily includes contact information, like names and addresses, and in some cases, social security numbers or medical information.

BCPS stated that they are holding PowerSchool accountable, and PowerSchool will directly notify anyone who may have been impacted with the details of the information that may have been accessed. PowerSchool has not provided the exact details of the information that may have been accessed.
