WASHINGTON D.C – The nation continues to mourn the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100.

Known for his tireless commitment to humanitarian causes, Carter’s legacy is marked by significant efforts both during and after his presidency.

As president, he played a key role in founding the Department of Education, improving Social Security services, and advocating for affirmative action.

After his time in office, Carter dedicated his life to humanitarian work through the Carter Center, an organization he founded in 1982 to promote peace, health, and human rights globally.

His efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, making him one of only four U.S. presidents to receive the honor.

Carter’s casket lay in state at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, where numerous public figures from both sides of the political aisle came to pay their respects, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and former President Donald Trump.

On Thursday, a state funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral, with a brief arrival ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by the full National Funeral Service at 10 a.m.

Former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama are expected to attend the service. President Joe Biden will deliver the eulogy.

Afterward, Carter’s casket will be transported to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where he will be laid to rest, marking the end of an extended public farewell that began Saturday.

For those wishing to see the funeral, 10 News will stream the service online Thursday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m.
