VSP investigating crash that killed two in Halifax County Christmas Eve

HALIFAX CO., Va. – The Virginia State Police are currently investigating a “double fatal crash” that occurred in Halifax County Tuesday.

According to VSP, the crash occurred at 12:20 p.m. on Chatham Road near the intersection with Leighwood Trail. A 2006 Jeep Liberty was heading eastbound when it crossed the center lane.

A 2002 Ford Explorer, heading westbound, then crossed the centerline in an attempt to avoid the Jeep, the Jeep however, corrected and moved back into the eastbound lanes.

The Jeep struck the Explorer head-on and then the Jeep caught on fire, according to authorities.

Three passengers including a one-month-old infant were pulled from the Jeep by a passerby and EMS personnel. The driver of the jeep and adult passenger died at the scene.

The infant was properly restrained and was flown to an area hospital as well asd the driver of the Explorer.
