The Danville Area Humane Society is tending to eight puppies that were found inside and around a dumpster in Gretna, Virginia, on Monday.
Paulette Dean, director and humane investigator for The Danville Area Humane Society, said all the puppies were found cold and hungry, but thankfully not emaciated.

“Leaving puppies or kittens or any animal at a dumpster or to fend for themselves is never the humane thing to do, and it is never the legal thing to do,” Dean said.
Two of the puppies were taken to the veterinary clinic for “significant health issues” including eyesight problems, worms, and hair loss.
Two citizens found the puppies, placed them in a tote, and took them to The Humane Society.
The puppies, estimated to be five to six weeks old, appear to be from two different litters, with some resembling Labrador mixes and others Rottweilers.
The DAHS filed a report for the incident, but this is not the first time the Human Society has cared for abandoned animals.
“All public shelters are overrun with animals right now. So we encourage people to support the shelter in their locality,” Dean said. “Come in and look through. Foster, adopt, volunteer. I guarantee your life will change.”
