ROANOKE, Va – This month, Carilion marked 119 lives saved across the country through organ donations.
Data shows Carilion saved the most lives of any hospital in Virginia and they are the first hospital in Virginia to ever save more than 100 lives in one year through organ donation.
“So, we do know there is an increasing need for organ donation,” said Afton Jamerson, the trauma program director at Carilion. “We have over 3,000 patients in the state of Virginia that are waiting for an organ donation, and we have doubled our number of organ donors here at Carilion since 2020.”
Despite this milestone, Carilion does not have an established transplant center, something they are actively working on to get approved by the state.
