Route 220 reopens following overturned raw milk tanker in Franklin County

The tractor-trailer milk tanker spilled over 1000 gallons of raw milk and 75 gallons of diesel

FRANKLIN COUNTY, VAUPDATE:

The tanker has been removed and the road is reopened, VSP said.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A tractor-trailer milk tanker spilled over 1,000 gallons of raw milk and 75 gallons of diesel fuel after crashing into a guardrail in Franklin County.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Saturday on the 10800 block of Route 220 South, when the truck struck the guardrail.

The spill, which affected both lanes of the roadway, included 1,000 gallons of raw milk and 75 gallons of diesel.

VDOT has implemented a detour and closed all southbound lanes of Route 220 until further notice.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) is en route to assess the spill and evaluate any potential risk of contamination.

Virginia State Police also said there were no injuries.
