Moyer Sports Complex in Salem is open after multi-million dollar renovation

SALEM, Va. – Hundreds gathered for the ribbon cutting of the new Moyer Sports Complex.

The complex first opened in 1992 and on average, is in use 230 days a year with around 250,000 guests annually.

In a game-changing move for Salem the state-of-the-art Moyer Sports Complex has new pickleball courts, a playground, and renovated softball fields and is now open to the public.

The Moyer Sports Complex is a place that has and will continue to have a positive economic impact.

“Monday through Friday we are going to be playing rec games in here and on weekends we are going to try and invite as many out-of-town guests as we can to stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants, go to our grocery stores, spend their money, and then leave and go back home but the money stays here,” John Shaner, Director of Parks and Rec. for the City of Salem said.

The complex has hosted multiple events including 27 NCAA softball championships. These new fields are extra special to players and coaches who started out on the older diamonds.

“Probably 90 percent of our seniors this year started with us at 8-9-10 years old right here on these fields and to see this transformation and to have the opportunity to play on something like this as seniors is just absolutely heartwarming.” Jeremy Wells, Salem High School head softball coach said.

As the gates open, the complex is already in full swing.

“Next year’s already packed. We are working on year 2026 right now,” Shaner said.

They don’t call Salem Virginia’s championship city for nothing. And the renovated Moyer Sports Complex is another step in solidifying that.
