Two charged after 2-year-old found unresponsive with serious injuries, authorities say

BOONES MILL, Va. – A man and a woman are in custody after a two-year-old was found injured and unresponsive, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said on Wednesday, deputies responded to a call for service at the 600 block of Paradise Acres Drive in Boones Mill for an unresponsive/unconscious two-year-old.

Upon their arrival, along with Franklin County Department of Public Safety EMS units, the unresponsive two-year-old was immediately transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, were told.

The sheriff’s office said the child’s stepfather, 39-year-old Andrew Fokas Jr. of Boones Mill, was taken into custody after attempting to elude police on foot.

Fokas was charged with one count of felony child abuse and neglect: serious injury. He is being held without bond.

On Thursday, authorities said the mother of the child, 34-year-old Jennifer Altice of Boones Mill was taken into custody and charged with one count of felony child abuse and neglect: serious injury.

She is being held without bond.

The child is receiving medical care and is now in stable condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

The investigation is ongoing.
