Here’s how you can give back to local nonprofits with GiveLocalNRV

GiveLocalNRV is back if you’re looking for ways to make a difference.

The online event helps raise money for local nonprofit organizations supporting residents in the New River Valley.

More than 100 organizations are participating in the event this year.

It kicks off at noon on Wednesday and runs until Thursday at noon, but you can give early.

Roanoke Higher Education Center, an organization that provides services for adult learners, is set to participate this year.

“Education is so important because it’s one thing that no one can take away from you once you have it, and it really equips an individual with the knowledge and the skills necessary to grow both professionally and personally, and being able to provide that service to our community is so important so that they can support themselves and their families,” said Development Officer Kaitlyn Van Buskirk.

The center is seeking $5,000 to go toward its career and workforce training center as well as scholarships to help students with tuition.

The Roanoke Higher Education Center has participated in GiveLocalNRV for three years.

Another organization participating in the online fundraiser is the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia. This group provides families with a place to stay while their children are in the hospital.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia helps families from all over. Executive Director Shannon Booth said it tends to help about 500 to 600 families. In the 40 years that the group has helped families, it’s helped about 28,000.

The organization is seeking donations for new bedspreads.

“We are looking to raise $4,500 for our ‘Spread Some Love’ fundraiser to actually replace all of our bedspreads in our rooms and what we want to do is always just make our rooms as comfortable as possible,” said Booth.

Again, GiveLocalNRV kicks off at noon and lasts until noon on Thursday. However, you can donate early.
