65-year-old Axton man accused of fatally shooting daughter-in-law and son, deputies say

A 65-year-old man is facing several charges, including second-degree murder, in connection with the shooting deaths of his daughter-in-law and son, according to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office. (Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office)

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – A 65-year-old man is facing several charges, including second-degree murder, in connection with the shooting deaths of his daughter-in-law and son, according to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said on Tuesday at about 9:30 p.m., the Pittsylvania County 911 center received a call about two individuals who had been in the 400 block of River Ridge Road in Axton.

Deputies arrived to find two individuals, later identified as 39-year-old Ashley Marie Roberts and 41-year-old William Jason Roberts, both from Roanoke, unresponsive outside of the home with injuries from an apparent shooting. Authorities said they both were pronounced dead at the scene and the suspect, 65-year-old William Lester Roberts, was taken into custody on scene without incident.

We’re told Ashley was the suspect’s daughter-in-law and William Jason was his son.

Both bodies have been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

William Lester has been charged with the following:

  • 2 Counts: 2nd Degree Murder
  • 2 Counts: Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • 1 Count: Discharging firearms within a dwelling

William Lester Roberts is being held without bond in the Pittsylvania County Jail.
