City of Lexington to host Juneteenth event

LEXINGTON, Va. – June 19th, or Juneteenth, is a state holiday honoring the end of slavery.

The city of Lexington is hosting an event this weekend to celebrate that milestone.

There will be kid activities, vendors, live music, and more at Richardson Park Saturday.

Organizers said this year, they’re focusing on helping kids learn about emancipation and freedom.

“We want to have a younger group of people to come up behind us to see the significance and the importance of this commemoration to our community so they will take the ball and continue to roll with it...and continue to make sure Juneteenth stays in the forefront of this community for years to come,” said City Councilmember Marilyn Alexander.

The event will also include popular children’s games from 1865, like sack races and tug of war.
