Washington & Lee officials gave 10 News the following statement with an update to the situation:

The directive to shelter in place was issued following receipt of an anonymous communication alleging a general threat to campus. The communication did not target a specific individual or location. At this time, we have no reason to think that the communication came from a member of the campus community or that it was related to a separate incident reported at Davidson Park that involved fireworks, which were initially reported as possible gunfire. Our Public Safety staff contacted law enforcement immediately and issued the shelter-in-place order. Law enforcement responded quickly and conducted a thorough search. It was determined that there was no active threat to campus safety and the shelter-in-place order was lifted at 7:23 p.m. As law enforcement is continuing its investigation, the university will not be sharing additional details. We take all safety concerns very seriously and are grateful for law enforcement’s swift response and our campus community’s patience and cooperation.
