LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lynchburg Police Department is investigating a potential swatting call that led to a three-and-a-half-hour scene near Hanover Street on Wednesday.

At about 3:37 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Hanover Street after receiving a call from a man claiming that he was holding a family hostage and was going to harm them, authorities said. He told police that he was armed with a gun.

Authorities immediately set up a perimeter around the residence and called multiple specialized units to assist; however, when law enforcement searched the home, no one was found inside.

We’re told the investigation remains ongoing but the incident is believed to be a swatting call.

A cash reward of up to $1,000 may be available for tips that lead to an arrest in this crime.


UPDATE

Lynchburg Police said a threat caused more than a three-and-a-half-hour scene near Hanover Street on Wednesday afternoon.

We’re told the threat was found unfounded.

When 10 News got to the scene, multiple police vehicles could be seen, along with some officers, who had their guns drawn.

Closer to the house in question, a tactical team would periodically draw near, then retreat.

Just after 6 p.m., the tactical team left the scene and police followed.

Lynchburg Police said there is no threat to the community, and the threat is still under investigation.

Lynchburg Police are asking community members to avoid the area of Hanover Street due to police activity.
