Roanoke City Public Schools kicks off school year with annual convocation

Roanoke City Public Schools is celebrating the upcoming school year with its annual convocation.

Students performed as staff and community leaders gathered for the event inside the Berglund Center Thursday morning.

They also recognized the 2023 Teacher of the Year, Adria Cintron, along with other education leaders.

“Without you, we couldn’t do this work,” School Board Chair Eli C.S. Jamison said to staff. “Our schools could not exist without all of you who work tirelessly with one purpose; in the service of our students to ensure they succeed.”

“It is thanks to your work that our future will be in good hands with this next generation,” Mayor Sherman Lea said.

Roanoke City heads back to school on Tuesday.
