HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police is investigating two separate vehicle crashes in Halifax County that resulted in the death of an 80-year-old man and another adult whose age hasn’t been released.

Authorities say the first crash took place on the Fourth of July at about 9:30 p.m. on Huell Matthews Highway, just north of East Hyco Road.

Herbert L. Throckmorton, 80, of Virgilina, Virginia, had been driving south on Huell Matthews Highway in a Chevrolet Silverado, along with 52-year-old Shelia S. Womack, of South Boston, who’d been driving in a Toyota Highlander.

Throckmorton tried to make a U-turn to head north, authorities said. Womack then swerved to avoid him but to no avail.

Virginia State Police told 10 News that the Chevrolet pickup was hauling cans of gasoline in its bed, which caused both vehicles to become engulfed in flames after they crashed into one another.

Throckmorton was transported to UNC Hospital in Chapel, North Carolina and passed away from his injuries on July 6, according to authorities.

Womack was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Authorities said Womack was charged with DUI.

There was another crash in Halifax County on July 6 shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Route 603 near Tower Lane, Virginia State Police said.

We’re told a 2005 Honda Pilot was going north on Route 603 when it ran off the left side of the road, went up an embankment, overturned and hit a tree.

The adult male driver, who has not been identified, was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he passed away the following day.

Both crashes mentioned are under investigation.
