Police Chief Robert Fincher says it’s only the second this year.

“We don’t have a whole lot of gun violence in the area, and it’s unfortunate that this has occurred,” Fincher said.

Fincher says it happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday along Commonwealth Avenue.

“It definitely was not random,” he said.

20-year-old Nyjeon Brandon suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was brought to SOVAH Health in Martinsville, according to police.

He died a short time later.

Fincher is stressing the importance of not resorting to gun violence.

“Things such as insults, small arguments, or even physical confrontations are not worth losing a life over,” he said.

One thing Fincher has learned in his 30 years of working gun violence cases is that alcohol and firearms never end well.

“This is the second homicide we’ve had this year where alcohol and firearms is gonna be a factor. The two of those never mix well together,” he said.

Fincher is urging the community to come together to get through a heartbreaking situation.

“With any tragedy, it’s time for the entire community to come together. To get over this incident, we need to come together as a community together to make certain that situations like this don’t occur again in the future,” he said.

Police are still investigating so they ask anyone with any information to come forward immediately.
