WINTERGREEN, Va. – Hearts are heavy in Wintergreen after a police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Friday night.
Wintergreen Police Officer Chris Wagner, 31, of Harrisonburg, had been responding to an emergency call about a man who had allegedly assaulted two 23-year-old men at a home on Arrowwood Lane. Wagner was the first to arrive on scene and located the suspect in the nearby woods. A struggle followed, and during the course of that struggle, Wagner was fatally shot.

There will be a visitation from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, June 26 at the Augusta Expo Event Center in Fishersville, Virginia.
Then at 12 p.m., a celebration of life will be held, followed by a burial in Augusta Memorial Park.

Daniel Barmak, 23, of Towson, Maryland, has been arrested and charged with the following in connection with Wagner’s death:
- Capital murder
- Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
- Two felony counts of malicious wounding
Barmak is currently being held at the Albermarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
