VSP: Lynchburg man dead after being hit by SUV on Campbell Highway

The crash happened Wednesday at 10 p.m.

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police is investigating a deadly pedestrian crash in Campbell County.

They say the crash occurred on Wednesday, June 14 at 10 p.m. on Campbell Highway, less than a mile south of Eastbrook Rad.

Investigators say a 2006 Ford SUV was traveling north on Campbell Highway when it hit a pedestrian walking in the road.

They say the SUV was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian.

State Police identified the pedestrian as 71-year-old Wayne E. Smith of Lynchburg, Va.

They say Smith died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was a 34-year-old man from Chatham.

Investigators say the driver was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.

State Police say no charges were filed.
