ROANOKE, Va. – UPDATE - 4:20 p.m. Monday
A man has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Downtown Roanoke that left one dead and two others hospitalized, according to the Roanoke Police Department.
RPD said on Sunday, April 23, around 1:20 a.m., police were on patrol in the downtown area when they heard gunshots coming from the 100 block of Campbell Avenue SE.
Responding officers found two victims, a man lying outside of a business in the area and a woman inside of the business, with gunshot wounds, according to authorities.
Police said the woman’s injuries appeared to be non-life threatening and the man’s injuries appeared to be critical.
Roanoke Fire-EMS transported both victims to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to police.
RPD said while officers were on scene, they were advised that another man with what appeared to be a non-life-threatening gunshot wound had arrived at the hospital via personal vehicle. Police said the investigation indicted this third victim was also injured at the shooting on Campbell Avenue SE.
Police said as officers were continuing their investigation at the scene, they were advised that the man with the critical gunshot wound has succumbed to his injuries, and RPD said this is now an active homicide investigation.
On Monday, RPD said they have arrested Brandon Woods, 26, and charged him with second-degree murder in connection with the incident.
Woods was identified as the suspect during the investigation and warrants were obtained early on Sunday morning, according to police.
Woods was taken into custody with the help of the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and Star City Drug and Violent Crime Task Force early on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Roanoke police said the investigation is ongoing.
