VDH issues warning after rabid skunk found in Botetourt County

The confirmed case was in the area of Mountain Pass Road

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – A skunk was confirmed positive for rabies in the area of Mountain Pass Road in Troutville Thursday, according to the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts.

The skunk was collected by Botetourt County Animal Control on Monday, VDH said.

Officials say citizens should not approach or touch any wild or stray animals, and should report any abnormal animal behavior to their local animal control dispatcher.

Residents of the area are asked to contact the RCAHD Environmental Health Division or the Botetourt County Animal Control if they know of any possible human or animal contact with this skunk.
