VIRGINIA – A bill that would have allowed the sale of recreational marijuana to start next year in Virginia has failed.
It’s one of three failed bills introduced in this General Assembly session aimed at regulating retail sales of marijuana for adults 21 and older.
Under current law, people 21 and over can have up to an ounce of cannabis on them or grow up to four plants in their homes. But there’s no legal way for adults to purchase marijuana for recreational use.
When lawmakers legalized recreational marijuana back in 2021, the goal was to begin retail sales in 2024.
Now, the next chance lawmakers will have to revisit the issue will be during next year’s General Assembly session or if Governor Youngkin calls a special session.
Virginians can still buy marijuana for medical purposes with a prescription.
