ROANOKE, Va. – Few Republican lawmakers were present for Trump’s speech Tuesday night. Many chose to remain in Washington.
Analysts say the disappointing GOP results in midterms likely reduced Trump’s appeal, but with such a loyal base of supporters, the party is going to have to take a different kind of approach in 2024.
“What other Republicans are gonna have to do to compete with Trump in primaries is convince primary voters that they can have everything they like about Donald Trump, the policies, conservatism, the in your face ... without all the baggage,” Ed Lynch, 10 News political analyst said.
Aides say that Trump is betting that his first-out-of-the-gate strategy will fend off potential rivals and provide deep-pocketed donors.
