Authorities said detectives with the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office and an investigator with the medical examiner’s office examined the scene extensively. They soon discovered the woman’s car had been found burned and abandoned in what they called a secluded area of Bath County.

Authorities said the body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for an autopsy, and the cause of death was ruled a homicide.

The victim has since been identified as 33-year-old Elizabeth Hensley of Roanoke, according to authorities.

Deputies say 47-year-old Matthew Griffin of Roanoke, was identified as a suspect.

Griffin was taken into custody on Oct. 24 with an outstanding warrant for violation of probation, according to authorities. Detectives say they obtained a search warrant for his home in Clifton Forge and discovered a gun and ammunition of the same make and caliber as what was used in the murder.

Deputies say the gun and ammunition were then sent to the Virginia Department of Forensic Science’s lab in Roanoke for forensic and ballistic examination.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, Griffin was charged with second-degree murder, according to the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives say more charges are forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Deputies say Griffin was served that warrant at the Botetourt – Craig Regional Jail and continues to be held without bond.
