Roanoke celebrates Ukraine’s Independence Day

ROANOKE, Va. – People in Roanoke came together Wednesday to celebrate the 31st anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence Day.

The day marks Ukraine’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Ukrainians who live in Roanoke told 10 News that this year’s celebration is met with mixed feelings as the war in Ukraine rages on following Russia’s invasion six months ago.

“All over the free world, people are celebrating and observing this day because it is so important to us, especially now when Ukraine is threatened by Russia,” said Martha Kuchar, who has family in Ukraine.

Ukraine supporters said although the attention of the war has died down, it’s not over, and they’re continuing to ask people to pray for Ukraine.
