ROANOKE, Va. – UPDATE
A student is in custody after a gun was fired at Lucy Addison Middle School in Roanoke Tuesday afternoon.
At about 2:15 p.m., the Roanoke Police Department was notified by the middle school’s resource officers that a gun was fired in a restroom on school grounds.
Responding school resource officers were able to locate a firearm and placed the school on lockdown as authorities secured the restroom area.
Roanoke police identified a boy involved in the incident and took him in for questioning.
He was charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and discharging a firearm on school grounds.
The student was transported to the Roanoke Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
Since the boy involved is a minor, police did not release his name.
No injuries were reported in the incident, but police mentioned there were property damages after the gun was fired.
At this time, police do not believe there is a continued threat to the school or any other Roanoke City schools.
Roanoke City Public Schools issued a statement that said, in part:

School counselors are available to support anyone who may need assistance, and additional counselors will also be available at the school for students and staff. Lucy Addison staff will be at the school tomorrow bright and early to welcome students back. We want our students and staff to know we are here for them and that their safety is always our top priority. There will also be additional police presence at the school.
Roanoke City Public Schools has a zero-tolerance policy about weapons in school, including anything resembling a weapon. We ask parents and guardians to speak with their children to make sure they understand this policy and that if students see something, to always say something.

The Roanoke City Police Department is investigating after a gun was fired at Lucy Addison Middle School Tuesday afternoon.
Roanoke City Public Schools made an announcement saying a gun was fired in the bathroom of the middle school.
The school was on lockdown earlier Tuesday afternoon, but that has since been lifted.
No one has been injured.
