CHARLRESTON, W. Va. – The Republican governors of Virginia and West Virginia are asking the Biden administration for a limited waiver to the federal vaccine mandate for health care workers.

The request comes as hospitals in both states are understaffed due to workers leaving the industry during the pandemic.

Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the vaccine requirement for most U.S. health care workers to proceed. West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin sent a letter Monday asking that the federal government consider giving rural and state-run facilities some flexibility.

They wrote that the proposed relief could come in multiple forms, such as broader conscience exemptions, flexibility on enforcement or a six-month delay.
