Roanoke nonprofit offers free tax assistance

You have the opportunity to get help online or in person

ROANOKE, Va, – If you need help filing your taxes, Total Action for Progress (TAP) in Roanoke is ready to help.

Starting February, TAP’s website will offer an online tax tool, called GetYourRefund. It’s an approved service by the IRS where you make an account and could file your taxes by submitting documentation virtually.

But if you want to see someone in person, TAP will launch a free clinic on Monday, Feb. 7.

Time slots will be available between 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

TAP VITA Program Director Teffany Henderson said to make sure to have all your documents, especially for the child tax credit, before signing up for an appointment. Inaccurate information could mean a major delay in your tax return.

“It may slow down the taxpayer’s refund if the information they provide to us is not accurate,” she said. “The best way to make sure the information is accurate is to have those letters so we can put it in correctly.”

The service will run through April 18.

To schedule an appointment, you must contact TAP beginning February 7.

The fastest way is to email taxhelp@tapintohope.org. You will receive a detailed email in return listing the items you will need before you arrive at your appointment.

You may also call the office at (540) 283-4804.
