CARROLL COUNTY, Va. – One man’s attempt to avoid a ticket didn’t work out as he hoped.

On Tuesday, a deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office stationed near mile marker 8 on Interstate 77 recorded a vehicle going 105 mph where the speed limit is only 65 mph, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

When the deputy went to initiate a traffic stop, the deputy said that the driver accelerated, hitting 135 mph, began weaving in and out of traffic, almost caused other crashes, and, at times, was driving in the grass.

When the driver exited the highway at Exit 14, near Hillsville, the deputy and a Hillsville Police Department unit were able to stop him, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The driver, Reinaldo Rodriguez III, 21, of Cheektowaga, New York, was arrested without further incident.

When asked why he eluded, Rodriguez told authorities that he was running because he did not want a ticket, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Rodriguez was charged with felony eluding and reckless driving and released after posting bail.

He’s scheduled to appear in Carroll County General District Court on April 16.
