ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – UPDATE - Dec. 28, 2020 at 8:00 a.m.
What started as a mental health well-being check and escalated into a police standoff has ended in suicide, according to Roanoke County Police.
It happened at a home in the 5900 block of Dogwood Avenue before 7 p.m. Sunday night. Authorities told 10 News that the situation started as a wellbeing check of a person who was passed out with a shotgun.
The person woke up when police arrived at the residence at 5900 Dogwood Ave and got hostile. police said. After an hours long standoff, a Roanoke County Police spokesperson said Roanoke County SWAT entered the home after 2 a.m. and found the individual deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
There is no threat to the public. An investigation is underway. The victim has not been identified.

Police said the standoff in Roanoke County is a mental health situation.

That person is still inside the house and is not communicating with first responders.
Police brought a SWAT team and a drone in to help with the situation.
If the person leaves the residence, police are planning to take them to get a mental health evaluation.

Police are responding to a standoff situation in Roanoke County near Glenvar.
Dogwood Avenue down Route 11 is filled with first responders as Roanoke County authorities are trying to sort out the situation.
One first responder on the scene told 10 News that there is a standoff happening, but there is no official word from the Roanoke County Police Department at this time.
