29-year-old Vinton man dies in Wednesday afternoon shooting

The Vinton man has two young children

VINTON, Va.SEPT. 17 - 6:04 P.M. UPDATE

A 29-year-old Vinton man died after being shot on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Vinton Police Department.

Authorities were initially responding to a well-being check when the call changed to a malicious wounding incident.

Police arrived to find a man in a parking lot across from adjoining townhomes on Chestnut Street who had been shot.

Officers provided first aid to him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the man as Carlos Jones.

His death is being investigated as a homicide, according to police.

Persons of interest have been established and interviewed as the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities are investigating a Wednesday afternoon shooting in Vinton, according to Vinton Police Department.

Family members tell 10 News that 29-year-old Carlos Jones is the person who was shot.

At 2:15 p.m., police responded to the 500 block of Chestnut Street, near the Famous Anthony’s on Hardy Road, for a reported malicious wounding.

Other 911 callers told authorities that someone had been shot.

Police arrived to find a man with critical injuries.

Authorities do not believe there’s an immediate threat to the community.
