Suspect in custody after police standoff in Lynchburg

A man fired several shots into the air

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lynchburg Police Department has a suspect in custody after a standoff lasted for more than two hours in Lynchburg on Monday evening.

Police say 41-year-old Brian Arthur is charged with reckless handling and discharging a gun within city limits.

Just before 4:00 p.m., Lynchburg police officers responded to the 3400 block of Sky View Place for a shots fired call. They determined Arthur had fired several shots into the air.

Arthur did not comply with the officers’ commands, according to the Lynchburg Police Department.

Members of the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team, along with police officers, spoke to Arthur for more than two hours before members of the tactical unit took him into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
