BEDFORD COUNTY (WSLS 10) -Wednesday, March 25 marks the 40th anniversary of the day Katherine and Sheila Lyons were last seen leaving a Maryland mall.

Investigators believe they were eventually brought to Bedford County.

Missing Lyon sisters investigation continues on Taylor's Mountain

Four decades later, investigators begin digging again for any trace of where they went.

Richard Welch Sr. and his nephew Lloyd Welch have been named persons of interest in the case.

The dig continues up Taylor's Mountain Road in Thaxton on property that once belonged to the Welch family. Captain Mike Miller with the Bedford County Sheriff's Department says the 40th anniversary is especially significant in Wednesdays dig.

"The morale today is especially somber, but yet it is a morale of where we are trying to bring this to a conclusion," Miller said.

While the gloom of a tragic cold case hangs over these hills, Sheriff Mike Brown says new tips could shed light on long overdue answers.

"We are hoping we can lay this thing to rest. close it," Brown said. "I can't imagine what the parents have been going through for the past forty years."

Forensic dig extended to Thursday for missing Lyon sisters

Even after all of the years, investigators say they are still just as determined to bring answers to the Lyon family that they've been waiting on for four decades.
