Getting through TSA checkpoints just got a little easier for Virginia residents.
If you live in Virginia and plan on traveling soon, you no longer have to worry about handing over a physical photo ID at select airport security checkpoints. You can now use the Virginia Mobile ID for identity verification during the screening process.

To set up your Virginia Mobile ID, or mID, you’ll need a valid Virginia driver’s license or ID card and an iPhone 8 with iOS 16 or an Android OS 8.0 or newer.
Then, you will need to:
- Download and launch the Virginia mID app from the Apple Store or Google Play
- Review and accept the Terms and Conditions
- Unlock/Authenticate your phone
- Scan the back of your ID
- Take a selfie
Once you’re ready to use it, hold the QR code to the verifying device or reader. Once it’s scanned, you should see a checkmark.
At this time, the Virginia Mobile ID is only accepted at select TSA checkpoints nationwide.
Virginia’s Mobile ID (mID) is a voluntary, secure and digital version of your Virginia-issued driver’s license or ID card that you carry in an app on your smartphone. Virginia mID was developed to give you a convenient way to prove your identity or age in a private, secure manner. No data leaves your device without your consent, and you control what information you share.
